I am pretty sure that some stage you have been thinking of a application that can run through your computer and find the duplicate files. Most of you will have this problem when it comes to images, audio and video files. That can waste lot of disk space. There is a Windows 8 hidden feature that can scan through your files find the duplicate files or when you are saving new files it will check if the same file exists. This simple windows 8 hack is from Windows blog Italia (Aka Windows 8 Italia).

  1. Download the dedup.rar file from windowsblogitalia.com. (You can find it at the bottom of the post)
  2. Extract all the files to C:Windows\System32\ folder
  3. Open Windows 8 PowerShell as an administrator
  4. Run the following commanddism / online / add-package / PackagePath: Microsoft-Windows-VdsInterop-Package ~ 31bf3856ad364e35 ~ amd64 ~ ~ 6.2.9200.16384.cab / PackagePath: Microsoft-Windows-VdsInterop-Package ~ 31bf3856ad364e35 ~ amd64 ~ en-US ~ 6.2.9200.16384 . cab / PackagePath: Microsoft-Windows-FileServer-Package ~ 31bf3856ad364e35 ~ amd64 ~ ~ 6.2.9200.16384.cab / PackagePath: Microsoft-Windows-FileServer-Package ~ 31bf3856ad364e35 ~ amd64 ~ en-US ~ 6.2.9200.16384.cab / PackagePath: Microsoft-Windows-dedup-Package ~ 31bf3856ad364e35 ~ amd64 ~ ~ 6.2.9200.16384.cab / PackagePath: Microsoft-Windows-dedup-Package ~ 31bf3856ad364e35 ~ amd64 ~ en-US ~ 6.2.9200.16384.cab

  5. After deduplication is activated successfully you can select any drive you want to use the feature except the one operating system is installed.


Useful Windows 8 deduplications commands

  • Enable Deduplication for D drive (Enable-DedupVolume D:)
  • Scan all the files-   Set-DedupVolume D:-MinimumFileAgeDays 0
  • Start the deduplication process Start-       DedupJob-D:-Type Optimization
